A Message from Executive Director, Susan J. Kibbe

As we get ready for our most cherished holiday of the year, Christmas, I’d like to remember those whom we’ve lost this year that were a part of our STPRA family.

Lee Lytton, III served as a STPRA director from January 2011 to December 2017 when he rotated off and became an advisor the first of this year until his death on February 4th. Lee was dedicated to tax reform, particularly reform of the estate tax and its elimination. Although he lived in San Antonio, Lee made it to all of our quarterly board meetings and as an attorney; he provided knowledgeable input and wisdom to the growing organization.

We lost Fred Cappadona last month. Fred and his wife Josie were early STPRA supporters. Fred was one of our members to whom I could always reach out to attend landowner meetings that we were called upon to organize and share concerns with Congressional delegations and others. He was firmly committed to property rights issues and became a director on January 1st of this year.

On behalf of our directors, advisors, staff and members, I would like to thank them posthumously for their service and support of our organization. Their time and commitment to STPRA helped grow our stature and effectiveness in solving problems that affect us here in South Texas and nationwide.

As we mourn the passing of former President George H. W. Bush, I would also like to share my reflections of my personal experiences with the 41st President of the United States. I had the distinct honor to meet and get to know George Herbert Walker Bush and his amazing wife Barbara. I join all the others who have commented on his sharp intellect, his kindness, and his ability to talk to anyone, but I’d like to add that his abounding energy, his enjoyment of life, and his humor are the things that I so admired. When he and Barbara were together it was like listening to a professional comedy duo. They had such fun together! They were both extraordinary individuals who served this country with such honor and distinction and are role models for us all!

Our upcoming year will be a busy one. The legislative session begins in January of next year, so there will be issues that affect us that will have to be monitored. Eminent domain reform promises to be an issue that will need your special attention and support.

We’ll also be working with landowners along the border to see how best to improve their quality of life and their property rights in an uncertain environment.
