Landline – April 2018

A Message from Executive Director, Susan J. Kibbe

I’d like to sincerely thank all of you who sent such kind and thoughtful notes and messages after the death of my Mother on March 10th. I appreciated them all so very much.

It is with great sadness that I share the news of the recent passing of Lee Lytton, Jr. Many of you knew Lee and his family and of their deep south Texas roots. Lee served as a STPRA director from 2011 to 2017, and had recently gone off the board to serve as an advisor. Lee will be sorely missed and his service will never be forgotten. For more information, see the link to his obituary.

As you will see from Sarah’s membership report, we’ve had several impactful events these past couple of months, with several more in the near future. We’re working hard to make STPRA’s presence known and to help bring attention to issues that affect us all here in South Texas.

If you have not registered for The Taxes & The Wall Symposium next Monday, we certainly hope that you will. It’s a learning event with a lunch hour of enjoyment, with an update from two of the participants (Jay Kleberg and Hillary Pierce) from the documentary The River & The Wall. They’ll share a sneak peak of their soon to be released film and tell of their adventures along the way.

Please note this attachment. It contains a list of border security and agriculture items that were included in the recent omnibus bill. It was a bloated piece of legislation; however there were some very important issues that were addressed in it.

Border security continues to be one of our main focuses. I’d like to hear from you, our members, how you feel about the existing law that gives migrants from Central America, and several other countries, the ability to ask for and receive legal status for credible fear claims. Your opinion is important to us and helps us as we work toward reaching a responsible solution.

The eminent domain subcommittee has been meeting periodically to devise an eminent domain reform strategy for the upcoming legislative session. You’ll be hearing more about their plans as we get closer to next year.

All of our issues are important to us. Let us know if there’s an issue that is negatively affecting you or causing particular concern.

I hope to see you next Monday!

All the best and until next month,
