Capitol Column

Rep. Dustin Burrows of Lubbock hit the ground running last week after his overwhelming victory in the Texas House Speaker race. Burrows, with significant ties to South Texas’ ranching industry, is only a week into his position and still has a lot of housekeeping to do. Standing house committee appointments, which were the main focus of the race for the past several months, have yet to be released. The delay has served to boost the hopes of house democrats that at least a handful of top positions will be in their favor.

On the other side of the building, South Texas’ newest state senator has been selected to serve on the Administration Committee (vice-chair), Border Security Committee, Education K-16 Committee, State Affairs Committee, and the Water, Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee. With these roles, he is in a position to have a significant impact on the future of our region of the state.

No action on legislation is currently set for either chamber, but over 2000 house bills and close to 1000 senate bills have been filed.

If any of our members would like to join me either for a look around the Capitol or to participate in the legislative process by testifying at a committee hearing, please reach out to myself or Susan. For a tour around the building for you and/or your family, the sooner the better because it will get quite busy very soon.
