Capitol Column

Happy Wednesday from Austin, home of the grandest pink granite building in the nation!

Now please don’t take this as a blanket endorsement of dams and lakes, unless of course you want a dam or a lake. This is not about water at this time. It is a moment of reflection, perhaps a reflection in the water of the moment.

I spend a lot of time at this grand building where its occupants, sent there by us, strive to balance the needs and desires of almost 30 million Texans. Water being front and center currently.

This article tickled me on several layers, but most importantly it made me reflect on an obvious legislative dilemma. Much of the time, most of the time, we humans tend to over complicate solutions to common problems and then stand back and admire our handiwork while we pat each other on the back. It is nice to see us put in our proper place once in a while. You know God is chuckling through it all.

Please take a pause to contemplate on your own handiwork and see if you recognize the trait, then follow His dam builder’s example. Sometimes when we take ourselves and our egos out of the way, we get what we desire and more.

Thanks for humoring me by reading to the end.

Till next week,

Jennifer Harris Joins STPRA

As Sarah Jones transitions from her staff role after years of dedicated service to STPRA, we are grateful to have her continue as an advisor.

Please join us in welcoming Jennifer Harris, the newest addition to the STPRA family! We are excited to have her on board as the Director of Member Services.

Jennifer grew up in the heart of the Central Appalachian region of Ohio, where agriculture and farming were foundational to her community. From a young age, she spent weekends and summers alongside her grandfather, a West Virginia cattle farmer, learning the value of hard work, integrity, and stewardship of the land.

In 2022, Jennifer permanently relocated to the Greater Houston area. She and her husband, Sean, a native Texan, now call Brenham home while also owning property in Hudspeth County. Together, they enjoy exploring rural Texas, often wandering where the Wi-Fi is weak to fully appreciate the state’s vast natural beauty, which they love capturing through photography.

With a background in small business ownership and a deep commitment to volunteerism, Jennifer has always sought ways to give back, serving on various boards, advisory councils, and as a mentor for the Small Business Administration. Her leadership experience and passion for making a positive impact align perfectly with STPRA’s mission to protect Texans’ property rights.

Jennifer says, “I am honored to contribute my skills and experience to STPRA, and I look forward to supporting the organization’s vital work for years to come.” And, as you can see below, she loves taking pictures. 🙂

Come meet Jennifer at our next STPRA in-person event, we know you will be happy you did!
